1. What is the Summer School on Biomedical Imaging with Deep Learning (BILD), and who is it intended for?

  • Answer: The Summer School on Biomedical Imaging with Deep Learning (BILD) is an intensive educational program bringing together foundational theory, hands-on labs, and real-world projects in medical imaging AI. It is designed for:
    • Computer Science / Informatics students
    • Medical students
      from Germany, Tunisia, Lebanon, and Iraq, with preference given to those enrolled in or affiliated with our partner institutes.

2. How many participants will attend, and how are they distributed?

  • Answer: We will host around 50 students in total:
    • around 40 from Tunisia
    • 8 from Germany, Lebanon, and Iraq

3. Is there a registration fee?

  • Answer: No.
    • Students from Germany, Lebanon, and Iraq: All catering, accommodation, and travel expenses are fully covered.
    • Students from Tunisia: All catering (coffee breaks & lunches) and workshop materials are provided.

4. How do I apply, and who is eligible?

      • Computer Science/Informatics students/graduates or Medical students/graduates
      • Enrolled in partner universities or institutes in Germany, Tunisia, Lebanon, or Iraq

5. What background do I need?

  • Answer:
    • Basic programming skills (Python recommended)
    • Enthusiasm for deep learning and medical imaging
    • No prior medical-imaging experience is required

6. Will there be preparatory materials or tutorials?

  • Answer: It depends on the knowlwdge and background of the selected participants. We may procide:
    • Pre-readings on Python & deep-learning fundamentals
    • Jupyter notebooks to practice before the school begins

7. What can I expect from the program?

  • Answer:
    • Lectures on core topics (segmentation, reconstruction, uncertainty, interpretability, federated learning, generative models, vision-language models, bias & causality)
    • Hands-on labs in small groups, using real medical-imaging datasets
    • Group projects and challenge sessions with expert mentoring

8. Who covers catering, accommodation, and travel?

  • Answer:
    • Germany, Lebanon & Iraq: Covered fully (catering + accommodation + travel)
    • Tunisia: Catering & workshop materials provided. Local transportation from the The University of Tunis El Manar Campus to the Venue will be provided.

    • From Tunis-Carthage Airport: ~20 min by taxi or ride-hail
