Summer School on Biomedical Imaging with Deep Learning

Welcome/Willkommen (de)/أهلاً وسهلاً (ar) to the 1st Edition of the Arab-German

Summer School on Biomedical Imaging with Deep Learning (BILD)

Join us as we embark on this journey between 1st and 5th September in Tunis, Tunisia to shape the future of AI in Medicine.

Register

The deadline for regsitartion is 15th June 2025 at 10AM CEST.

BILD 2025 is organized under the umbrella of the Strategic Arab-German Network for Affordable and Democratized AI in Healthcare (SANAD), uniting academic excellence and technological innovation across borders. This year’s edition is organized by the Albarqouni Lab at the University Hospital Bonn and the University of Bonn. We are proud to partner with leading institutions in the region—Lebanese American University, University of Tunis El Manar, and Duhok Polytechnic University — to deliver a truly international learning experience. Over five intensive days in Tunis, you will explore cutting-edge deep-learning techniques for medical imaging through expert lectures, hands-on labs, and collaborative case studies. Engage with peers and faculty from Germany, Lebanon, Iraq, and Tunisia as you develop practical skills in building and deploying AI models for real-world healthcare challenges. We look forward to an inspiring week of interdisciplinary exchange and the shared commitment to advancing affordable, life-saving AI in medicine.

BILD’s Mission

Our mission revolves around three core pillars

  • Innovative Teaching Modules: We will develop course modules that combine the latest AI research with hands-on, resource-aware exercises—such as lightweight neural networks for portable ultrasound and federated learning on decentralized datasets—tailored specifically to low-income contexts in the MENA region. These modules ensure participants gain both the theoretical foundations and practical skills needed to address healthcare challenges in Arab and German settings.

  • Knowledge Transfer & Research Excellence: By bringing together around 50 students and graduates alongside 10 faculty members from Germany, Lebanon, Iraq, and Tunisia, we foster a dynamic environment for peer learning and joint inquiry. Through collaborative workshops, co-mentored research projects, and regular exchange sessions, participants will share best practices, co-create solutions, and build a sustained transnational network of AI innovators in healthcare.

Set Your Expectations

Python

Participants will acquire proficiency in Python, a widely used programming language in the field of artificial intelligence and machine learning

Math. & Statistics

Participants will develop a strong foundation in statistics and mathematics, which are essential for understanding and working with AI and machine learning algorithms

Analytical Thinking

The Summer School will enhance participants’ analytical thinking skills, which are crucial for problem-solving in AI and machine learning

SANAD project

Strategic Arab-German Network for Affordable and Democratized AI in Healthcare (SANAD)

SANAD—the Strategic Arab-German Network for Affordable and Democratized AI in Healthcare—brings together leading universities and research centers in Germany, Lebanon, Iraq, and Tunisia to develop and deploy low-cost, human-centered AI solutions for medical imaging and health challenges in resource-limited settings. By combining innovative teaching modules, collaborative federated learning projects, and research exchanges, SANAD strengthens transnational partnerships, builds local AI capacity, and ensures that cutting-edge technologies are adapted ethically and affordably to serve diverse communities across the MENA region and beyond.

Albarqouni Lab

University Hospital Bonn, University of Bonn and Helmholtz AI

Albarqouni Lab, established in 2020 and located at the Clinic for Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology, University Hospital Bonn, University of Bonn and Helmholtz AI, aims to develop the next generation of AI in Medicine, specifically computational imaging algorithms with a particular focus on artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) models to improve the clinical workflow for patients, radiologists, and healthcare professionals. The lab is affiliated with the Munich School for Data Science (MUDS), the Medical Imaging Centre Bonn (MIB), and the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS). The research at the Albarqouni Lab focuses on three main areas: computational medical imaging, federated learning in healthcare, and affordable AI and healthcare.
